Divers and an unmanned underwater vehicle on Wednesday spotted the tail of the AirAsia plane that crashed into the Java Sea with 162 people on board, an important finding because the jet's all-important black boxes are located in that part of the aircraft. Powerful currents and murky water continue to hinder the operation, but searchers managed to get a photograph of the debris – nearly 6 miles from where Flight 8501 lost contact Dec. 28 – after it was detected by an Indonesian survey ship, National Search and Rescue chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo told reporters. One released image appeared to show an upside down "A'' painted on a piece of metal, while another grainy shot depicted some mechanical parts.

A series of small earthquakes rattled a Dallas-area city for two days and have left police overloaded with 911 calls about the shaking. The US Geological Survey recorded the temblors in the Irving area, including three Wednesday. No major damage or injuries were reported in 11 earthquakes recorded since Tuesday, with magnitudes from 1.6 to 3.6.

German government websites, including Chancellor Angela Merkel's page, were hacked on Wednesday in a cyber attack claimed by a group demanding that Berlin sever official ties with the Ukrainian government. The attack, against which counter-measures were taken, had left the sites periodically inaccessible since mid-morning, her spokesman Steffen Seibert said. Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk is due to meet with Merkel in Berlin on Thursday.

US businesses ramped up hiring last month in the latest sign that the nation's economy is expanding despite worries about global growth that have sent financial markets tumbling. Payroll processor ADP says that companies added 241,000 jobs in December, up from 227,000 in November. That suggests Friday's government report on December job gains will also be healthy.

United States Steel Corp said it would temporarily idle its pipe manufacturing plant in Lorain, Ohio and lay off 614 workers, largely due to weak demand from the oil industry. The company sent a layoff notice to workers on Monday, citing weak market conditions. A number of North American oil and gas companies have cut capital spending plans following a sharp fall in oil prices, which have more than halved since mid-2014.

Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell has agreed to pay a Nigerian fishing community about $83.5 million for the worst oil spill in Nigeria, an unprecedented settlement that experts say could open a floodgate of litigation there and abroad. Wednesday's agreement ends a three-year legal battle in Britain over two spills in 2008 that destroyed thousands of acres of mangroves and the fish and shellfish that sustained villagers of the Bodo community in Nigeria's southern Niger Delta.
