An alleged new affiliate of the Islamic State group in Saudi Arabia has claimed responsibility for an attack that targeted a mosque used by police special forces in the kingdom's southwest on Thursday, killing 15 people. It was one of the deadliest attacks in years against Saudi security forces that battled a wave of Al Qaeda attacks about a decade ago and which have come under sporadic attacks in recent weeks in the capital, Riyadh, by militants purportedly linked to the Islamic State group.

Pennsylvania's attorney general was charged Thursday with leaking secret grand jury information to strike back at her critics, then lying about it under oath, in a case that could spell the downfall of the state's highest-ranking female politician. Kathleen Kane leaked the material to a political operative to pass on to the media "in hopes of embarrassing and harming former state prosecutors she believed, without evidence, made her look bad," Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said. Kane, the first woman elected attorney general in Pennsylvania, was charged with perjury, obstruction, conspiracy and other offenses.

With much pomp and fanfare, Egypt on Thursday unveiled a major extension of the Suez Canal billed by its patron, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as a historic achievement needed to boost the country's ailing economy after years of unrest. Mr. Sisi, wearing his ceremonial military uniform and trademark dark sunglasses on a sweltering August day, flew to the site aboard a military helicopter and immediately boarded a monarchy-era yacht that sailed to the venue of the ceremony.

Conservative Andrzej Duda was sworn in as Poland's new president Thursday, bringing political change to the nation's top office. However, confusion surrounded the absence from the ceremony of European Union leader and former Polish prime minister Donald Tusk. Tusk's absence Thursday suggests that Duda might have a hard time working alongside the centrist government that Tusk led until becoming EU leader last year. In his inauguration speech, Duda, now the supreme commander of Poland's armed forces, said his chief concern was for the nation's security in the face of a resurgent Russia.

Commuters faced a day of disruption Thursday after a strike shut down the London Underground system for the second time this summer. Union members walked off the job amid a dispute about how to implement a new 24-hour service on weekends. Unions argue work-life balance issues haven't been addressed and that management should hire more people to cover extra shifts. Transport officials say they've offered a salary increase and bonuses to compensate for the changes.

Cybersecurity researchers said they took control of a Tesla Motors Inc Model S car and turned it off at low speed, one of six significant flaws they found that could allow hackers to take control of the vehicles, the Financial Times reported. Kevin Mahaffey, chief technology officer of cybersecurity firm Lookout, and Marc Rogers, principal security researcher at Cloudflare, said they decided to hack a Tesla car because the company has a reputation for understanding software than most automakers, the FT said.
