Billionaire businessman Donald Trump has made the cut for Thursday night's leadoff debate of the 2016 presidential race, joined by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and seven other Republican contenders. Also selected among the top 10 – based on recent national polls – Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Seven others will be excluded, including former technology executive Carly Fiorina and former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, relegated to a pre-debate forum and second-tier status in the party's crowded field.

Israeli authorities kicked off a promised crackdown on Jewish extremists following last week's deadly arson attack on a Palestinian family, arresting a high-profile activist accused of leading a new movement of defiant settler youths who embrace violence and reject the rule of law in the name of the purity of the Holy Land. Meir Ettinger, whose arrest Monday was extended in court Tuesday, was arrested for "involvement in an extremist Jewish organization." The agency would not say if he is also suspected in the July 31 arson attack, but it has accused Ettinger of heading an extremist movement seeking to bring about religious "redemption" through attacks on Christian sites and Palestinian homes.

Mortgage giant Freddie Mac reported net income of $4.2 billion for the second quarter, up sharply from the same period of 2014, as it increased its purchases of home loans and sold off greater volumes of riskier mortgages. The April-through-June results posted Tuesday marked the government-controlled company's 15th straight profitable quarter.

Yemen's pro-government troops fought pockets of resistance outside a key military base in the country's south Tuesday, a day after they seized it from Shiite rebels, military officials said. The capture of the Al-Anad base – once the site of US intelligence operations against Al Qaeda's powerful Yemeni affiliate – was a significant victory for the forces allied to Yemen's exiled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi in their battle to reverse the gains of the rebels known as Houthis.

Cameroon has expelled more than 3,000 Nigerians as part of the fight against Nigeria's Islamic extremists who have launched attacks across borders, officials said Tuesday. Authorities also arrested hundreds of Cameroonians and Nigerians accused of collaborating with Boko Haram, said Midjiyawa Bakary, governor of Cameroon's Far North region. They deported Nigerians who said they were refugees but were not staying at refugee camps and lacked identification papers.

Orders to US factories increased in June, and a key category that reflects business investment plans posted a modest rise. But the gains weren't robust enough to suggest that the sluggish manufacturing sector is mounting a significant turnaround. Factory orders advanced 1.8 percent in the month, the Commerce Department reported Tuesday. The jump, however, was fueled by a surge in demand for commercial aircraft, a volatile sector that can swing widely from month to month.

The world governing body for track and field (IAAF) fought back on Tuesday against media reports of suspected widespread doping in the sport, rejecting accusations it failed to investigate dubious drugs test results properly. The IAAF said the reports by Britain's Sunday Times newspaper and Germany's ARD/WDR broadcaster, which implied cheating was rampant in athletics, were based on "guesswork" and not facts.
