Two World War I Army heroes — one black, one Jewish — finally received the Medal of Honor they may have been denied because of discrimination, nearly 100 years after bravely rescuing comrades on the battlefields of France. Sgt. William Shemin repeatedly dodged gunfire to pull wounded comrades to safety during three days of bloody battle. And Pvt. Henry Johnson rescued a wounded comrade from his all-black regiment while single-handedly fighting off a surprise German attack.

Californians responded to the worst snowpack measurement on record and unprecedented drought restrictions by decreasing their water use 13.5 percent in April, regulators said Tuesday. Southern California cities including Los Angeles and San Diego continued to lag in conservation, cutting just 9 percent. The data show residents and businesses achieved the savings compared to the same month of 2013.

Google isn't making much headway diversifying its workforce beyond white and Asian men, even though the Internet company hired women to fill one out of every five of its openings for computer programmers and other high-paying technology jobs last year. The imbalanced picture emerged in a demographic breakdown that Google released this week. The report underscored the challenges that Google and most other major technology companies face as they try to add more women, blacks and Hispanics to their payrolls after many years of primarily relying on the technical skills of white and Asian men.

Twelve years ago, Ian Wright and some fellow engineers launched Tesla Motors, a Silicon Valley company that has helped jumpstart the market for electric cars. Now, the Tesla co-founder wants to electrify noisy, gas-guzzling trucks that deliver packages, haul garbage and make frequent stops on city streets.

At the French Open tennis tournament, former champion Roger Federer lost, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the men's quarterfinals Tuesday against his pal and Swiss Davis Cup teammate Stan Wawrinka. Also in Paris, one women's semifinal was set Tuesday: No. 7 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia against No. 13 Lucie Safarova of Russia.
