The day after high-stakes contests in five states, the math and momentum point to a Donald Trump Republican presidential nomination as GOP officials grapple with whether to embrace the billionaire businessman or rally behind a long-shot alternative. It wasn't a question for Democrat Hillary Clinton, who took aim at Mr. Trump on Tuesday night after strengthening her position against rival Bernie Sanders with another batch of primary victories of her own.

Two female suicide bombers killed at least 24 worshippers and wounded 23 in an attack during dawn prayers Wednesday on the Umarari mosque on the outskirts of the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri, the city that is the military command center of the war against Boko Haram, officials said. The attack comes just days after at least 76 of the emaciated extremists surrendered this month, indicating success in cutting supply routes, including from neighboring countries to which the insurgency has spread.

North Korea's highest court sentenced an American tourist to 15 years in prison with hard labor for subversion on Wednesday, weeks after authorities presented him to media and he tearfully confessed that he had tried to steal a propaganda banner. Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia undergraduate, was convicted and sentenced in a one-hour trial in North Korea's Supreme Court.

Domestic violence and child abandonment are common occurrences in New York City homeless shelters, suggests a new report published Wednesday by the New York Daily News. According to 2015 reports obtained by the paper, multiple cases of abandoned children were reported across homeless shelters in January, February, July, September, and October. In one case, New York Police officers found two children, ages six and eight, locked alone in a room for almost 24 hours. And in another case, eight children were removed from a mother who reported taking illegal drugs daily. The paper also found several incidents of physical abuse.

Ferguson City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to accept the sweeping overhaul of its police and court system the Justice Department demanded in February. This agreement followed a testy exchange that highlighted the complex reality of implementing well-intentioned reforms in a fiscally tense environment. The city council accepted the agreement in principle last month but had requested a compromise over cost concerns; the Department of Justice responded one day later by suing the city. The city quickly gave its consent to avoid a lawsuit, but Vanita Gupta, who heads the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, promised to drop the requirement that the city raise salaries of police officers, which the city council said would bankrupt the city.
