A rookie police officer who fired into a darkened stairwell at a Brooklyn public housing complex, accidentally killing a man who had been waiting for an elevator, has been indicted in his death, a lawyer said Tuesday. Officer Peter Liang will appear in court Wednesday in the November shooting death of 28-year-old Akai Gurley, according to Scott Rynecki, an attorney representing Gurley's family. Grand jury proceedings are secret. It wasn't clear what charges were considered; they could range from misdemeanor official misconduct to manslaughter, a felony.

Snow-choked New England braced for more winter grief later in the week as people dug out from another 2 feet of snow Tuesday. Thousands of angry Boston commuters stranded by a transit shutdown scrambled to find other ways to get to work. As people struggled to find places to put the latest snow, and officials considered dumping it by the truckload into the ocean, forecasters warned that yet more snow was possible Thursday and again over the weekend.

Disgraced former International Monetary Fund boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn sat nonchalantly with folded arms and stretched legs Tuesday, before telling a French court he was completely unaware that women who participated in orgies at luxury hotels in Paris and Washington were prostitutes. Saying he was simply a "libertine who likes to party," the 65-year-old Strauss-Kahn took the stand in Lille, accused alongside 13 co-defendants of aggravated pimping in connection with a sex ring centered on the city's Hotel Carlton.

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim began a 5-year prison sentence on Tuesday after a court rejected his final appeal against a sodomy conviction, a decision he called a "murder of judicial independence" and human rights groups condemned as unjust. The case was widely seen at home and abroad as politically motivated to eliminate any threats to the ruling coalition, whose popularity has slowly been eroding since 2008 after more than five decades of unquestioned dominance. Anwar was accused of sodomizing Saiful Bukhari Azlan, then 23, who was working as a lowly aide in the opposition campaign office in 2008.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush on Monday decried messages posted to Twitter by a top technology aide as "inappropriate," but a spokeswoman said the recent hire would remain with Bush's nascent presidential campaign. The distraction came on the same day Bush told supporters and former aides he is "singularly focused" on weighing a presidential bid, and as he prepared to release thousands of emails from his time as Florida's chief executive and the first chapter of a related e-book to highlight what he called a compassionate leadership style with deep conservative credentials.

Coca-Cola Co. reported a slightly higher-than-expected profit on Tuesday as sales in North America, its biggest market, rose for the first time in four quarters, offsetting the impact of a stronger dollar on its overseas business. Shares of the world's largest beverage maker rose 3.2 percent to $42.56 in premarket trading. Coke's sales in North America have declined or remained flat for the last three quarters as US consumers opt for healthier beverages and shift away from diet sodas due to concerns about artificial sweeteners.
