A jury convicted former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell and his wife, Maureen of corruption, fraud and bribery, after the couple accepted more than $165,000 of gifts and loans from a businessman. Both bowed heads and wept as a chorus of "guiltys" kept coming from the court clerk. McDonnell was widely considered a possible running mate for presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012. He was charged with doing favors for a wealthy vitamin executive in exchange for the gifts and loans. Both were found guilty on most counts against them. A federal jury in Richmond returned the verdicts Thursday after a five-week trial and deliberating for three days.

A US appeals court ruled Thursday that same-sex marriage bans in Wisconsin and Indiana violate the US Constitution, in another in a series of courtroom wins for gay-marriage advocates. The unanimous decision by the three-judge panel of the US 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago bumps the number of states where gay marriage will be legal from 19 to 21. Since last year, the vast majority of federal rulings have declared same-sex marriages bans unconstitutional.

The Dalai Lama has again been refused entry into South Africa where he was going to attend the 14th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, his South African representative said. Concern about angering China has been cited for a visa refusal in the past. Nangsa Choedon, the representative, said officials from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation called her to say the Tibetan spiritual leader's visa was denied, the Cape Times newspaper reported Thursday.

The family of a journalist slain by Islamic State militants says Steven Sotloff dedicated his life to portraying the suffering of people in war zones, but was "no hero." Family spokesman Barak Barfi told reporters gathered outside the family's suburban Miami home Wednesday that Sotloff "tried to find good concealed in a world of darkness," and to give voice to the weak and suffering in the Arab world. A militant video released Tuesday showed the beheading of Sotloff, who was kidnapped in Syria last year. Barfi said Sotloff was "no war junkie," but was drawn to the stories of the turbulent Middle East. Barfi said Sotloff's family was grieving, but have pledged to "not allow our enemies to hold us hostage with the sole weapon they possess - fear."

A routine experiment designed to help children understand tornadoes erupted in a chemical flash at a Nevada museum, injuring 13, including children who suffered burns. Emergency crews responded to a report of a possible explosion at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday at the Terry Lee Wells Discovery Museum in downtown Reno. City of Reno spokesman Matthew Brown told The Associated Press that a preliminary investigation indicates it was not an explosion but a chemical flash, which is "similar to if someone threw gasoline on a fire." He said he couldn't comment further on the distinction. Eight children and one adult were transported to a Reno hospital for minor burns or smoke inhalation, city Brown said in a statement.

For the first time in the Syrian civil war, Al Qaeda fighters are hunkered down on Israel's doorstep, and Israelis in the lush, hilly Golan Heights who have long considered Syrian President Bashar al-Assad their bitter foe are now worried about something more ominous – that they could become the militants' next target. The push into the Golan by the Nusra Front, as Al Qaeda's branch in Syria is known, comes just two weeks after Israel ended a 50-day war against Hamas on its southern border with the Gaza Strip. Israelis in the Golan have grown accustomed to hearing the sound of distant battles between rival forces in Syria's civil war. But last week's seizure of the strategic Quneitra border crossing by a mix of rebels – including the Nusra Front, fighters of the Western-backed Free Syrian Army and others – has created an unprecedented situation that has brought the extremists to within just a few yards of Israeli positions.

Joan Rivers, the raucous, acid-tongued comedian who crashed the male-dominated realm of late-night talk shows and turned Hollywood red carpets into danger zones for badly dressed celebrities, died Thursday. She was 81. Rivers was hospitalized last week after she went into cardiac arrest at a Manhattan doctor's office following a routine procedure. Daughter Melissa Rivers said she died at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, surrounded by family and close friends.
