Jurors in the federal death penalty trial of Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev began deliberations Tuesday, a day after both prosecutors and his lawyers told them Tsarnaev must be held accountable for participating in the terror attack. Deliberations in the guilt phase began almost two years after twin bombs exploded near the marathon's finish line on April 15, 2013, killing three people and wounding more than 260.

U.S. Sen. John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, said he will run for his sixth term in 2016. The Arizona Republican, 78, made the announcement Monday in an interview with NBC News. He will be 80 by Election Day, but he said his Senate career is "just getting started."

The new YouTube Kids mobile app targets young children with unfair and deceptive advertising and should be investigated, a group of consumer advocates told the Federal Trade Commission in a letter Tuesday. Google introduced the app in February as a "safer" place for kids to explore videos because it was restricted to "family-focused content." But the consumer activists say the app is so stuffed with advertisements and product placements that it's hard to tell the difference between entertainment and commercials.

The next book by former Vice President Dick Cheney is aimed directly at President Obama. Cheney's "Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America" will be published on Sept. 1 by Threshold Editions, the publisher announced Tuesday. The book, co-authored by Cheney's daughter Liz Cheney, contends that Obama has abandoned a decades-long tradition of American global leadership. In a statement issued by Threshold, the former vice president said Obama had "significantly diminished" US power at a time of a "rapidly growing" terrorist threat.

FedEx Corp said it will buy Dutch package delivery firm TNT Express for 4.4 billion euros ($4.8 billion), aiming to take on bigger rivals United Parcel Service and Deutsche Post in Europe. European regulators blocked a 2013 takeover of TNT by UPS due to concerns it would stifle competition, but analysts and executives said on Tuesday FedEx, with its strong air fleet, would complement TNT's expansive European road network. "This (acquisition) will dramatically lower our cost to serve European markets," FedEx communications vice president Patrick Fitzgerald said.

Seventy years after the U.S. defeated Japan in World War II, Americans are divided over Japan playing a more active military role in Asia — and most Japanese are opposed. The results of a Pew Research Center poll released Tuesday in Washington, D.C., come as the two countries are finalizing a revision of their mutual defense guidelines that is expected to expand the scope of Japan's military activities in the region. The telephone survey of 1,000 Americans and 1,000 Japanese also found a high degree of trust between the two nations, a shift from the animosity that prevailed in the 1980s and 1990s when the two countries were embroiled in trade disputes.

Duke University has captured another NCAA national basketball championship. Tyus Jones scored 23 points, his freshman teammate Jahlil Okafor added a couple of key baskets in the closing minutes, and the Blue Devils beat Wisconsin, 68-63, on Monday night in Indianapolis to give head coach Mike Krzyzewski his fifth national title.
