Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday voiced regret over Turkey's downing of a Russian warplane, saying his country was "truly saddened" by the incident and wished it hadn't occurred. It was the first expression of regret by the strongman leader since Tuesday's incident in which Turkish F-16 jets shot down the Russian jet on grounds that it had violated Turkey's airspace despite repeated warnings to change course. It was the first time in half a century that a NATO member shot down a Russian plane and drew a harsh response from Moscow.

Pope Francis plunged Sunday into conflict-wracked Central African Republic to bring a message of peace and reconciliation to a country where Christian-Muslim violence has divided the capital and forced nearly 1 million people to flee their homes. He presided over Mass on Sunday and plans to visit the Muslim quarter of the capital city on Monday.

Militant Islamist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in northern Nigeria on a procession of Shi'ite Muslims that killed at least 21 people in the country's Kano state on Friday. Boko Haram, which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, has been trying to establish an Islamist state adhering to strict Sharia law in northeast Nigeria since 2009. About 2.1 million people have been displaced and thousands have been killed during the six-year insurgency.

A prominent Kurdish lawyer and human rights defender was killed Saturday in an attack in southeast Turkey in which a police officer also died, officials said. Tahir Elci, who faced a criminal charge for supporting Kurdish rebels, was shot while he and other lawyers were making a press statement. Two policemen and a journalist were also injured. It wasn't immediately clear who was behind the attack and there were conflicting reports about what led to it.

Israel on Sunday suspended contacts with EU representatives on Mideast peace issues to protest the 28-nation bloc's decision that goods produced in Israeli settlements in the West Bank must have special labels and cannot say they were made in Israel. The decision, which deepened a fissure with the EU over the labeling issue, came as a rash of Palestinian attacks showed no signs of relenting. In Sunday's violence, Palestinians carried out two new stabbing attacks — wounding a woman and a police officer. One of the assailants was shot dead.

Burkino Faso's citizens cast their ballots Sunday in the nation's first presidential and legislative elections since a popular uprising toppled the nation's longtime leader last year. Many say the vote will be the most democratic in the West African nation's history, because no incumbent is on the ballot and the presidential guard has been dissolved. A popular uprising in October 2014 forced President Blaise Compaore to resign after a 27-year rule. A transitional government was put in place, but a week-long coup in September caused the election, originally scheduled for October, to be postponed.
