Turkish jets bombed Kurdish rebels inside Turkey on Tuesday as NATO proclaimed its "strong solidarity" with the country's fight against the Islamic State group but urged restraint in a campaign that has also targeted Kurdish separatists. In a statement, Turkey's military said it used fighter jets to bomb Kurdish rebels after its soldiers came under fire by heavy weaponry in Sirnak province near the country's border with Iraq. Earlier Tuesday, NATO backed Turkish steps to defend itself against terrorism in a rare emergency meeting, which had been called to assess the threat posed by the Islamic State extremist group and the Turkish response.

Attorneys for Jonathan Pollard, who has served nearly 30 years in prison for spying for Israel, said Tuesday the United States has granted him parole and he will be released in November. Pollard, an American, was arrested in November 1985 as he tried unsuccessfully to gain asylum in Israel's Washington embassy in a sensational espionage case that captivated public attention and stoked passions. He was sentenced to life in prison.

Zimbabwean police said Tuesday they are searching for an American who allegedly shot a well-known, protected lion with a crossbow in a killing that has outraged conservationists and others. The American allegedly paid $50,000 to kill the lion named Cecil, Zimbabwean conservationists said. Authorities on Tuesday said two Zimbabwean men will appear in court for allegedly helping with the hunt. The American faces poaching charges, according to police spokeswoman Charity Charamba. Walter James Palmer was identified on Tuesday by both the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force and the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe as the American hunter, a name that police then confirmed.

A prison worker who was "in over her head" with two inmates convicted of murder tearfully pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of aiding them by smuggling hacksaw blades and other tools to the pair, who broke out and spent three weeks on the run. Joyce Mitchell, an instructor in the tailor shop at the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York, wore shackles and prison stripes as she entered the pleas in a barely audible voice.

A submarine wreck discovered off the eastern coast of Sweden probably dates from World War I rather than last year when the military hunted for a suspected Russian submersible, the Swedish armed forces said on Tuesday. Monday's announcement by shipwreck hunters made headlines in Sweden, coming less than a year after its navy searched for a suspected Russian submarine sighted near Stockholm in what as the country's biggest military mobilization since the Cold War.

The National Transportation Safety Board concluded Tuesday that the developer of a commercial spacecraft that broke apart over the Mojave Desert last year failed to protect against the possibility of human error, specifically the co-pilot's premature unlocking of a braking system that triggered the in-flight breakup of the vehicle. In its finding, the board took pains to make clear that Scaled Composites, an aerospace company that has partnered with Virgin Galactic to develop the spacecraft, should have had systems in place to overcome the co-pilot's mistake.

Tom Brady's four-game suspension for his role in using underinflated footballs during the AFC championship game has been upheld by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The league announced the decision Tuesday, with Goodell saying that the New England quarterback told an assistant to destroy Brady's cellphone on or just before March 6. Brady met with independent investigator Ted Wells on that day.

A family of treasure hunters has found more than $1 million worth of gold artifacts off the coast of Florida. Multiple media outlets reported Monday that boat captain Eric Schmitt and his family made the find June 17 in Atlantic Ocean water about 15 feet deep near Fort Pierce.
