The United States and Egypt are returning to a "stronger base" in bilateral ties despite tensions and human rights concerns, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday after talks with his Egyptian counterpart. "Egypt remains vital ... to engagement and stability in the region as a whole," said Kerry, who held the first strategic dialog between the two countries since 2009.

Three relatives of the late Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden were among four people killed when a private jet crashed on landing in southern England, British police confirmed Saturday. The Hampshire Police force said formal post-mortems were still being conducted, but the victims were believed to be "the mother, sister and brother-in-law of the owner of the aircraft, all of whom are from the bin Laden family." Arab media and NBC News named the relatives as Osama Bin Laden's stepmother Rajaa Hashim, his sister Sana bin Laden and her husband Zuhair Hashim.

NASA is offering up wreckage from the Challenger and Columbia for public view after hiding it from the world for decades. A new exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida features two pieces of debris, one from each lost shuttle, as well as poignant, personal reminders of the 14 astronauts killed in flight. It is an unprecedented collection of artifacts – the first time, in fact, that any Challenger or Columbia remains have been openly displayed. NASA's intent is to show how the astronauts lived, rather than how they died.

The brother of the late figurehead of the Afghan Taliban on Sunday joined a growing challenge to the extremist group's newly appointed leader, even as it offered a statement purportedly quoting a well-known militant supporting him. Mullah Abdul Manan, the brother of the late Mullah Mohammad Omar, told The Associated Press that new Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansoor was "selected" by a small clique of his own supporters. That comes after Mullah Omar's son, Yacoub, also warned Mansoor didn't have the support of the wider Taliban.

Vice President Joe Biden's associates have resumed discussions about a 2016 presidential run after largely shelving such deliberations during his son's illness and then his death earlier this year. But Biden has yet to tell his staff whether he will run or personally ask them to do any planning for a potential campaign, according to several people close to the vice president. Recent conversations between Biden's associates and Democratic donors and operatives have led to speculation that Biden will challenge front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton for the party's nomination.

Many Americans assumed the Confederate flag was retired for good after governors in South Carolina and Alabama removed it from their statehouses this summer and presidential candidates from both parties declared it too divisive for official display. But people still fly it, and not just in the South, despite announcements by leading flag-makers and retailers that they will no longer sell products showing the secessionist battle flag. Some who display it are motivated by pride in their ancestry or enthusiasm for Southern history. Others see it as a symbol of their right to challenge to authority in general, and the federal government in particular.
