Officials from Doctors Without Borders called for an independent fact-finding mission to investigate the US air strike on a hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan, that killed at least 22 people. Invoking international humanitarian law under the Geneva Conventions, the inquiry would gather facts and evidence from the United States, Afghanistan, and NATO and then make a decision on charging the US for war crimes. The group's international president, Joanne Liu, told reporters in Geneva Wednesday that the weekend strike "was not just an attack on our hospital, it was an attack on the Geneva Conventions. This cannot be tolerated."

The Coast Guard ended its search for 33 missing crew members from a US cargo ship that sank last week during Hurricane Joaquin at sunset Wednesday. Robert Green, father of missing crew member LaShawn Rivera, said despite the decision, "I think we're still hopeful. Miracles do happen, and it's God's way only. I'm prayerful, hopeful and still optimistic." Earlier, federal investigators said they still hope to recover a data recorder from the ship as search crews continued looking for any survivors. The National Transportation Safety Board sent a team to Jacksonville, Fla., on Tuesday to begin the agency's inquiry, which will help determine why the captain, crew and owners of El Faro decided to risk sailing in stormy waters.

It’s only October, and more people have already visited Yellowstone National Park this year than ever before. The park has received more than 3.8 million visitors this year, last month bringing the highest showing than any previous September. This upswing in traffic has many anticipating that the national attraction will top 4 million visitors by the end of the year. The park could end up taking in an additional $4.5 million this year from entrance fees, spokeswoman Julena Campbell told Reuters.

Philadelphia-based retailer Urban Outfitters Inc. has agreed to end on-call shifts for employees in its New York stores, the state’s Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Wednesday. The practice requires workers to be available for scheduled shifts, although they may be canceled at a moment’s notice. Some critics of "just-in-time" scheduling argue it hinders upward mobility, by preventing workers from adequately organizing their lives. Schneiderman says Urban Outfitters agreed to provide New York employees with their work schedules at least one week in advance, starting in November. Other retailers that have recently reached similar agreements include Gap Inc., Bath & Body Works, Victoria’s Secret, and Abercrombie & Fitch.

Homo naledi, the ancient human ancestor that’s been providing exciting clues about evolution, had “human-like feet” that allowed it to walk long distances and perhaps even run, researchers said on Tuesday. Examining our relative’s feet and hand bones that were recently uncovered in a South African cave, researchers said there were several similarities H. naledi shared with our species.

The wettest June on record has cut pumpkin yields in Illinois by half, and crop experts warn there might not be enough canned pumpkin to go around. The state of Illinois yields 90 percent of the country’s canned pumpkin, with the majority located in Morton, the “pumpkin capital of the world,” 160 miles south of Chicago. Libby, the largest canned-pumpkin manufacturer in the US, says their can distribution will likely be cut by a third. “It would be wise to buy it for Thanksgiving now,” said Roz O’Hearn, a spokeswoman for Libby told the Associated Press. “Once we ship the remainder of the 2015 harvest, we’ll have no more Libby’s pumpkin to sell until harvest 2016.”
