The death toll from a weekend ferry disaster in central Bangladesh rose to 70 on Monday, as divers finished their search after the vessel was lifted to the surface and towed to shore. A local government administrator, Rasheda Ferdousi, said the area of the river around the accident site was still being monitored because some passengers were still missing. He did not give an exact number.

President Obama directed the Labor Department on Monday to proceed with new rules that would rein in conflicts of interests among Wall Street brokers who advise clients on retirement investments, administration officials said. The change would mandate that brokers follow a "fiduciary standard" to prioritize clients' interests over brokers' interests, they said. The proposal is opposed by many Republicans and financial firms, which are fearful that the plan will limit broker compensation.

Kiev accused pro-Russian rebels of opening fire with rockets and artillery at villages in southeastern Ukraine on Monday, all but burying a week-old European-brokered ceasefire deal. The Ukrainian military said it could not pull weapons from the front as required under the tenuous truce, as long as its troops were still under attack. Ukraine's currency, nearly in freefall this month, fell a further 10 percent on Monday on fears that the truce could collapse.

A US jury on Monday ordered the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority to pay more than $218 million for providing material support to terrorists, a victory for Americans suing over attacks in the Jerusalem area more than a decade ago. The verdict in Manhattan federal court added a new dimension to the long-running Middle East conflict, as American victims sought to use US courts to seek damages. Jurors found in favor of 10 American families suing over six attacks attributed to the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and Hamas. The award could be tripled under the US Anti-Terrorism Act.

An Egyptian court sentenced an icon of the 2011 uprising to five years in prison on Monday, in the latest sign of authorities' determination to stifle dissent despite promises by the president to release "wrongly jailed youths." The verdict in the retrial of well-known activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah reduced an earlier 15-year prison sentence for organizing an unauthorized protest and allegedly assaulting a police officer. But the ruling was condemned by defense lawyers and supporters who said he should have been set free.

Honda Motor Co., the Japanese automaker at the center of an air-bag defect scandal, said Monday its president Takanobu Ito will step aside and replaced by another Honda executive. The unexpected decision follows massive recalls by Honda of vehicles equipped with air bags made by Japan's Takata Corp. The airbags have inflators that can explode, expelling shards of metal and plastic. At least five deaths and dozens of injuries have been linked to the problem worldwide.
